Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Desert Sage Health different from other clinics?
Desert Sage Health is a family-owned business that has been dedicated to providing high-quality outpatient mental health services to the West Valley since 2018. We make every decision with the focus being the best interest of our patients. We do not have to worry about corporate policies or answering to a CEO about the bottom line, which allows our priority to remain on the ultimate goal of helping people.
We understand medical care is costly and fewer outpatient providers are accepting insurance, which can create a roadblock in reaching out for help. We believe accepting insurance helps decrease the financial burden. We have an onsite, dedicated biller who works daily to ensure our billing is accurate and to navigate any insurance obstacles.
Additionally, we believe creating a diverse team and a positive work environment allows our Providers and Staff to focus their energy on delivering exceptional care.
Who is the right therapist for me?
Our Intake Provider takes several factors into account when choosing the right therapist for you. This includes your goals for treatment, the provider’s specialties, personality fit, and your schedule. If you meet with your new provider and do not feel they are the right person for you, notify our front office. Your case will then be reviewed by the clinical director to determine the best provider to transfer you to.
How do you vet your therapists?
Our therapists complete an extensive interview with our clinical director and at least one other member of the team. We focus on a provider’s education, experience, and therapeutic approach to ensure their attitude and focus is professional, empathetic and evidence-based. Additionally, we take steps to verify educational degrees and licenses.
Does insurance cover online therapy?
Most insurance providers cover telehealth services, however self-funded plans may have limitations on what they will cover. Our New Patient Coordinator verifies your benefits before we schedule your initial appointment, which includes determining if your insurance provider covers online/telehealth therapy.
Do you provide or prescribe medications?
No, our providers do not prescribe medications. We provide talk therapy and coordinate care with your prescriber or, if needed, provide recommendations for a prescriber.
What if I don’t have insurance?
We accept self-pay patients. Please contact our front office to discuss payment options.
Do you accept AHCCS?
Unfortunately, we do not accept AHCCS at this time.
What is your cancellation policy?
For Therapy-based appointments, we ask you to provide a 24-hour notice of cancellation. For evaluation appointments, we ask you to provide a 48-hour notice of cancellation. These time frames allow us to reach out to patients waiting for these openings. Failing to cancel within the required time frame may result in a late cancellation fee.
Do I need a referral before I schedule?
Referrals are not typically needed unless it is a requirement by your insurance provider. When verifying your benefits we will determine if a referral is needed.
What does verification of benefits mean?
Once we have your insurance information we complete a “verifiction of benefits,” which takes place by contacting your insurance company to identify what treatment is covered by your insurance plan. This includes determining what services are covered, including telehealth, and if your plan requires a co-pay, co-insurance, and/or deductible. We then contact you to share the details of your benefits.
Insurance companies have a disclaimer stating the information they provide to us may change or be inaccurate. If we suspect this to be true we may contact the company multiple times to determine if the information is consistent. When we call to provide you with your insurance details we also share this disclaimer to be fully transparent.
I have insurance. How is the cost of my session determined?
Your insurance provider determines the cost of your session based on the plan you have selected. Mental Health Benefits often have different coverage and costs compared to your medical coverage. When verifying your benefits our goal is for you to have a full understanding of the costs required for treatment.
I have a high deductible or co-pay, can this be waived?
Unfortunately, no. When we sign a contract with an insurance provider we agree and are required to collect co-pays, co-insurance, and/or deductibles. We may set up a payment plan if you have a high deductible. Please contact our front office for more details.
Why choose Desert Sage Health for an Autism Evaluation?
We take a team approach with at least two providers reviewing background and assessment results to ensure your child has an accurate evaluation. Our reports are extensive and written so they can be reader-friendly, while also meeting standards for schools, disability requirements, and insurance standards.
Many insurance companies require the use of specific assessments which we have ensured are included in our battery of tests. For families with Triwest we ensure all required forms and referrals are sent to Triwest if your child is diagnosed with Autism, allowing you to qualify for services under the Autism Care Demonstration.
My child has an IEP at school. Do you suggest they get an evaluation?
IEP (Individualized Education Plan) will give your child a “designation” to help them increase success at school. This is different from a diagnosis. A Diagnosis is often required before a child can qualify for specialty treatments such as Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy. Additionally, an evaluation will provide several recommendations for assisting your child both in school and at home.
Can I use my Education Savings Account (ESA) funds for the evaluation?
We meet ESA’s required standard for evaluations and will work with you and ESA to use these funds to cover the cost of the evaluation.
What ages do you evaluate?
We provide Autism Evaluations for children as young as four years old through adulthood. Our ADHD and psychological evaluations start at age five through adulthood.
