Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Evaluations
What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and significantly impacts attention, concentration, and/or behavioral regulation. Individuals with ADHD often experience difficulties maintaining focus, managing impulses, and regulating energy levels across multiple settings, including home, school, and work.
ADHD is classified into three primary subtypes:
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation – Characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, following through on tasks, and managing organization.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation – Marked by excessive movement, restlessness, impulsive decision-making, and difficulty waiting or taking turns.
- Combined Presentation – A combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 7 million children (ages 3–17) in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADHD, with boys having a higher prevalence rate than girls. The CDC also reports that 6 in 10 children with ADHD experience moderate to severe symptoms. While many children see symptom improvement with age—particularly with early intervention—ADHD can persist into adulthood.
Research from the Mayo Clinic estimates that 5% of U.S. adults have ADHD, but fewer than 20% receive a diagnosis or treatment. Without proper evaluation, many adults struggle with lifelong challenges that impact their personal, academic, and professional lives.
Why Get Evaluated for ADHD?
A professional ADHD evaluation provides clarity and direction for effective treatment. Left undiagnosed, ADHD can lead to difficulties in academic performance, workplace productivity, relationships, and mental well-being. Many people with ADHD may appear to “hyper-focus” on certain enjoyable activities, leading others to mistakenly believe they can control their attention at will. This misunderstanding often delays proper diagnosis and intervention.
Co-occurring conditions are common in individuals with ADHD, including depression and anxiety. Additionally, research suggests a higher incidence of ADHD in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A comprehensive evaluation helps uncover any overlapping conditions, leading to more effective treatment strategies.
Benefits of ADHD Evaluation:
Accurate Diagnosis
Identifies whether ADHD or another condition (e.g., anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder) is contributing to symptoms.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Ensures access to the right therapeutic and/or medication interventions.
Prevention of Misdiagnosis
Differentiates ADHD from other conditions that may present similar symptoms, preventing unnecessary or ineffective treatment.
Improved Quality of Life
Helps individuals and families develop coping strategies for better focus, organization, and emotional regulation.
